Cyclist killed by falling rocks on GAP identified as Gail Luck, 79
The Wisconsin woman was riding the Great Allegheny Passage with her husband near Connellsville when the rocks came down; Saturday's coroner report had given her age as 76.
The woman killed Saturday when rocks came down on the Great Allegheny Passage near Connellsville has been identified as Gail Luck, 79, of Germantown, Wisconsin, Fayette County Coroner Bob Baker said.
Luck was riding the trail with her husband when a rockslide hit around noon Saturday, Oct. 17, near mile marker 87.6 in Ohiopyle State Park, according to the park. Both riders were trapped under the rock. Luck died at the scene, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Her husband was hurt and was flown to a hospital. Officials said he is expected to recover. His name has not been released.
The age in Monday's identification differs from Saturday's coroner report, which gave Luck's age as 76. Early reports Saturday also described her as a Florida woman. The coroner's identification lists her as 79 and from Wisconsin.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and State Police are investigating.
The GAP is closed between mile 87, where the Sheepskin Trail meets the GAP, and Connellsville at mile 89 until further notice, according to the trail's alert. Riders are being detoured onto the Sheepskin Trail, with a shuttle from Dunbar to Connellsville. No reopening date has been announced.
The 150-mile GAP runs from Cumberland through Frostburg, Meyersdale and Ohiopyle to Pittsburgh and is a regular ride for many Garrett and Allegany County cyclists.
