A driver died early Tuesday, Oct. 27, after their vehicle caught fire in a single-vehicle crash near Deep Creek Lake, according to the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company.

Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company (DCVFC), Garrett County Emergency Services, and Maryland State Police were dispatched at approximately 1:28 a.m. for an automatic crash notification in the area of Archie's BBQ, the fire company said in a release posted Friday, Oct. 30.

Garrett County Emergency Services Supervisor Chase 11 arrived within minutes and found a single-vehicle crash with the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, according to the release.

DCVFC personnel arrived shortly after and brought the fire under control within minutes. Despite their efforts, the victim succumbed to their injuries, the fire company said.

Responding personnel remained on scene for more than three hours.

The fire company said it delayed its release "out of respect for the victim and their family, allowing time for proper family notification and for those closest to the victim to process this tragic loss."

"There is also a difficult and heartbreaking side to emergency services that our members experience, and it is important that we acknowledge that reality with the respect and sensitivity it deserves," the release stated.

DCVFC thanked Slopeside Market for providing coffee and food to first responders during the extended scene work.

Maryland State Police has not released additional details about the incident or the victim's identity.
