Eastbound I-68 ramp from US 220 closes nightly for two weeks
The eastbound I-68 entrance ramp from U.S. 220 closes 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday nights, for about two weeks for water main work.
Drivers getting onto eastbound Interstate 68 from U.S. 220 in Allegany County will have to take a detour at night for the next two weeks while crews repair a water main.
The Maryland State Highway Administration said the eastbound I-68 entrance ramp from U.S. 220 (McMullen Highway) will close each night starting Sunday, Oct. 18. The closures run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday nights, and are expected to last about two weeks, weather permitting. City of Cumberland crews are doing the water main work, according to SHA.
While the ramp is closed, SHA says drivers headed east should:
- Take the ramp to westbound I-68 instead.
- Follow westbound I-68 to Exit 40 in LaVale (Vocke Road).
- Turn right onto MD 658 (Vocke Road).
- At the traffic light, turn left to get back on eastbound I-68.
Warning and detour signs will be posted. SHA asks drivers to obey the work zone speed limit, put phones down and watch for crews.
The closure is overnight only, so most daytime traffic between Garrett County and Cumberland should not be affected. Garrett County drivers coming home late from the Keyser or Cresaptown area on U.S. 220 and heading east on I-68 should plan for the extra few minutes.
