Updated Information- Nine Dead in Erie Mass Shooting as Police Release New Details

ERIE, PA. — Authorities have released additional details following Friday’s mass shooting in Erie that left eight victims dead, along with the suspected gunman, in a tragedy that has shaken the community.

According to Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah, the shooting occurred in the 700 block of Perry Street near East 7th Street on the city’s East Side. Police were dispatched shortly before 5 p.m. Friday after a gunshot-detection alert.

The eight victims included six adults and two young children, ages 1 and 5. One of the adult victims was eight months pregnant. The suspected shooter, a 45-year-old man, also died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During a news conference Saturday, police shared additional information about the moments leading up to the shooting. Investigators said two women arrived at the residence appearing distressed and reportedly sought help by knocking on doors. Video and audio evidence reviewed by investigators indicated that the gunman came outside and shot the women before returning inside.

Police said all the deaths occurred before officers arrived at the scene. During the subsequent response, sounds that some may have mistaken for gunfire were attributed to flash-bang devices deployed by SWAT officers.

Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators continue to examine evidence, including cellphones, as they work to establish what led to the deadly incident.

A motive has not yet been publicly confirmed, and officials have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information as the investigation continues.
