Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced a $250,000 settlement with the owners of Dennett Rehab Center in Oakland, Maryland, over allegations of substandard care provided to hundreds of residents. The settlement involves both Dennett Rehab and previous owner DRM Healthcare. It also includes a three-year monitoring agreement through the Office of the Attorney General.

According to the investigation, the facility failed to meet registered nurse staffing requirements on 17% of shifts and failed to meet bedside care staff-to-resident ratio rules on 25% of shifts. Investigators also found 11 patients suffered serious injuries from falls and other preventable events, along with serious violations involving nutrition, feeding, and long call-bell response times.

The Attorney General’s Office said the case came to its attention in 2024 after two residents died at the facility. Investigators later conducted an unannounced “strike force” review with MFVVU, Adult Protective Services, and the State Long-term Care Ombudsman.

Attorney General Brown said, “Maryland’s seniors deserve safe, attentive, and dignified care—and taxpayers deserve to know it’s being delivered.”

This marks the fifth nursing home case resolved in the past two years by the Medicaid Fraud and Vulnerable Victims Unit as part of a broader effort to improve conditions at Maryland’s roughly 230 nursing homes.
