City of Frostburg warns of scam emails demanding wire payments
Fraudulent messages target people named in public meeting agendas, request ACH or wire transfers
The City of Frostburg is warning residents and businesses about fraudulent emails impersonating city officials and demanding payment by wire transfer or ACH.
The city posted an alert Monday, Oct. 27, 2026, saying scammers are targeting "individuals and businesses whose names or projects have been mentioned in public meetings." The fake messages claim that ACH, wire transfer or online payment is the only option to settle an account.
"Any email claiming that ACH, wire transfer, or online payment is your ONLY payment option is fraudulent," the city said. Legitimate city payments can always be made by check or in person.
How to spot the scam
Official city emails come only from addresses ending in @frostburgcity.org or @iworq.net. Scammers use lookalike domains such as @CityofFrostburg.net.
Anyone who receives a suspicious payment request should contact the city directly at 301-689-6000 or [email protected] before responding. The city recommends verifying requests independently rather than replying to unsolicited emails, especially those demanding immediate electronic payment.
Frostburg is in Allegany County, about 25 miles east of Oakland.
