Families wondering how they will pay for college can get a head start at a free workshop next month at Garrett College.

"The Buck Starts Here" is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the conference room of the college's Performing Arts Center in McHenry, the college announced. Garrett College, Garrett County Public Schools and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce are hosting, with the college's Office of Financial Aid running the program.

The session is aimed at parents and guardians of students in grades 7 through 12, but anyone interested in paying for college is welcome, and students do not have to be planning to attend Garrett College. Topics include scholarships, need-based aid, savings plans, work-study and loans.

Andrew Harvey, the college's director of financial aid, will lead the workshop. He said the goal is to help "all families with school-age children understand their options," and that families who start saving and planning early are more likely to have money set aside when a student enrolls, which can help students reach their goals without taking on heavy debt.

Registration is encouraged through a link in the college's announcement. For more information, call the Garrett College Office of Financial Aid at 301-387-3080.
