Cumberland man charged with assaulting officers during early morning disturbance
A 19-year-old allegedly resisted arrest, kicked and spit at officers, and damaged a police cruiser after refusing to leave a South Mechanic Street business early Sunday, Nov. 1.
A Cumberland man faces multiple charges, including four counts of assault, after he allegedly attacked police officers responding to a disturbance early Sunday, Nov. 1, according to the Cumberland Police Department.
Officers were in the area of 20 S. Mechanic Street at approximately 1:23 a.m. responding to a disturbance and began clearing a large group of people from the business, police said.
A male who refused to leave the area yelled at and taunted the officers, according to the release. One of the man's friends began to escort him away, but he walked back toward the business and created a disturbance by continually yelling.
He was ordered to leave the area but instead approached officers with closed fists in a fighting stance, police said. Officers informed him he was under arrest, and he began to back away.
As officers attempted to place him in hand restraints, he actively resisted, according to the release. Once handcuffed, he continued to resist officers' attempts to place him into a police cruiser. As officers escorted him to the cruiser, he began to kick and spit at them.
After being placed into the cruiser, he kicked the doors, causing substantial damage, police said.
The suspect was identified as Nehemiah Matthew Younger, 19, of Cumberland. He was transported to Central Booking, where he is awaiting a bond review.
Younger is charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, failure to obey, resisting arrest, four counts of assault, and malicious destruction of property.
Second arrest
In a separate incident early Sunday, Nov. 1, Cumberland police responded to the area of E. Fourth Street at approximately 2:15 a.m. for reports of an active assault, according to the release.
Officers heard yelling coming from a residence in the area and made contact with a victim who said they needed to get away from Darrius Devon'Te Harris, police said. The victim told officers they had been arguing with Harris and that he had shoved them in the chest.
Officers observed redness and bruising consistent with the victim's statement, according to the release. Harris confirmed the argument, and after a brief investigation, he was placed under arrest.
Harris, 28, of Cumberland, was transported to Central Booking, where he is awaiting a bond review. He is charged with second-degree assault.
Charges are allegations. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
