Garrett County voters can start casting ballots in the 2026 gubernatorial general election this Thursday, Oct. 22, when early voting opens at two sites in the county.

Early voting runs every day from Thursday, Oct. 22, through Thursday, Oct. 29, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the Garrett County Board of Elections. The two early voting centers are:

  • Oakland Community Center (the Armory), 14 N. Eighth St., Oakland
  • Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department hall, 178 Springs Road, Grantsville

Any Garrett County voter may use either site. The Maryland State Board of Elections says voters who are in line by 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote, and that anyone who votes early cannot also vote by mail or on Election Day.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voting by mail. Any registered Maryland voter may vote by mail but must first ask for a ballot. Under the state's 2026 deadlines, a request sent by mail or fax must be received by Tuesday, Oct. 27, and online requests are accepted through Friday, Oct. 30. Completed ballots must be postmarked on or before Nov. 3, or dropped in an approved drop box or delivered to the local elections office by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Garrett County voters can also request a ballot by calling the county Board of Elections at 301-334-6985.

Registration. The deadline to register online or by mail passed on Oct. 13, but the state says eligible residents can still register in person on Election Day.

After the polls close. The county board has scheduled its first canvass of mail-in ballots for Nov. 5, the provisional ballot canvass for Nov. 12 and the final mail-in canvass for Nov. 13, all at 10 a.m. at the Board of Elections office, 2008 Maryland Highway, Suite 1, in Mountain Lake Park. A post-election audit is set for Nov. 24 at 9 a.m. Canvasses are open to the public.

A sample ballot is posted on the county's elections page, and the board is still looking for election judges across the county. Questions can go to the Board of Elections at 301-334-6985 or elections@garrettcountymd.gov.
