Pennsylvania's cold-weather life jacket requirement took effect Sunday, Nov. 1, and runs through April 30, 2027.

During this period, all boaters are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket while underway or at anchor on boats less than 16 feet in length or on any kayak, canoe or paddleboard, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

The seasonal requirement applies to Pennsylvania waters, including those near Garrett County. Boaters who fish or paddle on Pennsylvania lakes or the Youghiogheny River should be aware of the regulation.

The law aims to reduce cold-water drowning deaths during months when water temperatures make immersion particularly dangerous.
