Dry, mild week in Garrett, with showers possible after Halloween
The Weather Service sees highs in the mid-60s and no rain in Oakland until Saturday night, as Maryland's black bear season opens and fall color holds at peak.
Garrett County's dry stretch should hold through Halloween, with highs in the mid-60s most days, the National Weather Service forecast for Oakland shows. The first chance of rain in the forecast arrives Saturday night.

Bear season opens
Maryland's six-day black bear hunting season runs Monday, Oct. 26, through Saturday, Oct. 31, in Garrett, Allegany, Frederick and Washington counties, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources said. It is the state's 23rd annual bear hunt. DNR drew 1,050 permits from 4,820 lottery applicants this year, and each permit allows one bear.
Last year's hunt took 89 bears statewide, 62 of them in Garrett County, according to DNR.
Color still at peak
Fall foliage was still at peak in Garrett and Allegany counties in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' most recent foliage report, released Oct. 22. Garrett County Forester Melissa Nash said the bright early-season leaves are "starting to give way to the more golden and russet tones of oaks and hickory."
