Westernport Elementary Students Get Surprise Day Off — Here’s Why

WESTERNPORT, MD — Some students in Allegany County are getting an unexpected day off at the end of March — but it’s all part of something bigger happening inside their school.
Kindergarten through 5th grade students at Westernport Elementary School will not have classes on March 31, as staff prepare for a major transition into newly renovated space.
Instead of a typical school day, March 31 will serve as a “move-in day”, giving teachers and staff time to fully set up the school’s updated first-floor classrooms.
Behind the scenes, staff will be:
- Moving desks, supplies, and equipment
- Reorganizing classrooms
- Preparing brand-new learning spaces for students
The additional day off falls during Easter Break — but it applies only to Westernport Elementary’s K–5 students.
Officials with Allegany County Public Schools confirmed the plan, noting the district received approval from the Maryland State Department of Education to use the day for this purpose.
What This Means for Students
When students return, they’ll be walking into updated, reorganized classrooms as part of ongoing improvements at the school.
For many families, it’s a small schedule change — but one that signals real progress happening inside the building.
Garrett County News will continue to follow local school updates and keep the community informed.
